MATTY REVEL DOMINATES AT BC CUP!!!

Matty Revel lit it up at the BC Hockey U17 BC Cup tournament in Salmon Arm this past weekend.  Revel was one of 9 YHA kids selected to play in this prestigious event.  Revel is a complete hockey player with tremendous finish and a knack for making players around him better.  Revel led the tournament in points and goals scoring 5 goals and 4 assists for 9pts in 6 games played.  Congratulations Matty!

The Yale Hockey Academy, in conjunction with the Yale Sport Academy, is planning on raising money through the Drive One 4UR Community initiative.  We hope to raise $6,000 for the Heart 2 Heart program, which volunteers their time in helping a school / oprhanage in Haiti.  Come on out on May 26th from 10:00am - 4:00pm at Yale Secondary for a test-drive and help us help others in need!

WHL first overall draft pick Jake Virtanen was inducted into the Abbotsford Sport Wall of Fame for 2012 for his accomplishments in the sport of Hockey.  Jake was a member of the Fraser Valley Bruins (Major Midget), a Major Midget all-star, top scorer for Team BC at the U16 tournament, member of Yale's Provincial Championship High School Hockey team, and a selected player for U17.  Jake has most certainly earned this prestigious award, and we wish him good luck in his future ambitions as a student-athlete.

Congratulations are in order for the following YHA students who have been selected to compete at the BC Cup on May 9 - 13th. Forwards, Jake Virtanen, Mitchell Skapski, Matthew Revel, Ryan Simpson, Cam Seto, Michael Holub and Jared Virtanen.  The lone defensemen is Kyle Baron and Zach Dyment will play in net.  Go rip it up boys!!! So very proud of you!

The Yale Lions have completed the threepeat!  There will be a third banner raised to the rafters of the Abbotsford Rec Centre as the Lions downed the Earl Marriott Mariners 6-2 in front a raucous crowd at the Langley Sportsplex Tuesday night.  The Mariners came out flying as they were up on the Lions twice in the first period.  Austin Edwards' one timer at the end of the second period proved to be the game winner as he wired a pass from Jake Virtanen past the EMS netminder.  Matt Revel tallied three times en-route to the championship victory.   Yale continues its unprecedented undefeated streak into next year's tournament.   Congratulations Yale!

YHA alumni Shea Thedore (95 birth year) continues to turn heads in the WHL.  The 6' defensemen from Aldergrove currently sits 5th on the team in scoring and is 3rd among rookie defensemen in the WHL!! The smooth skating, puck-moving prodigy looks like he will gain attention moving forward to next year's NHL entry draft!

Yale Hockey Academy has once again sent 4 of its students to the Major Midget All-Star Game.  Jake Virtanen, Mitch Skapski, Matthew Revel and Austin Edwards all represented the Fraser Valley Bruins last Saturday at Planet Ice in Coquitlam.  All 4 boys are hoping to play Junior hockey next year as Jake Virtanen has signed with the WHL's Calgary Hitmen, while Skapski, Revel and Edwards have all affiliated themselves with BCHL clubs.

Brianna Keats "Keaters" has been named player of the month (December) for the BC Female Major Midget League. As a first year midget player, Brianna made the all-star team.  "Keaters" plays for the powerhouse Fraser Valley Phantom, and is an offenseive threat.  Her goal is to play under scholarship and with continued success and hard work like she is putting forth, that goal is definetely reachable.

1)  Returning Academy students are open to apply for next year starting Dec 1st with Jan 1st deadline. (online applications)

 

2)  New students that are In-catchment are open to apply as of Jan 1st. with a Feb 1st deadline.   (paper applications)

 

3)  Cross boundary and Out of District applications are open Feb 1st. with a March 1st deadline  (paper applications)

 

Application deadline is March 1st. 

 

We plan on advising students of acceptance or decline by March 9th. 

 

Fees will be due May 1st. 

 

We will look at catchment applications first and will follow the following Selection Criteria:

 

1)  Grades (B average criteria) (IEP's are exempt; however, documentation of IEP and written recommendation from support Teachers may be required)

2)  Behaviour (Principal recommendation)

3)  Hockey Skill 

 

 

 

 


DEVON TOEWS GETS FULL RIDE NCAA DIV #1 SCHOLARSHIP!!!

YHA's Devon Toews got some incredible news on Monday: Quinnipiac, a Div #1 school in the ECAC hockey league, called to offer "Doni" a full ride scholarship.  Devon represents the Yale Hockey Academy's first NCAA Div #1 scholarship recepient.  We are so proud of him and he serves as a role model for other skilled players who have heard the message, "Your too small to play the game at a high level".

The Yale Hockey Academy sent 3 boys to the Western Canadian U16 championships, held in Moosejaw Sask.  Jake Virtanen scored 5 goals, including two game winners against Sask in round robin play and in the Bronze medal game.  Mitchell Skapski notched in 2 goals and Matthew Revel scored as well. 

 

Out of the 13 goals scored by Team BC, these 3 boys had 8 of them!  Well done boys and good luck throughout this season!

The Chilliwack Chiefs are pleased to announce the selections of Abbotsford Minor Hockey products Matt Revel and Mitch Skapski in today's BCHL 15 year old Affiliate Draft. Last season both Revel and Skapski were members of the Abbotsford Hawks AAA Bantam Team. Both are currently playing with Fraser Valley of the BC Major Midget League. Revel is sixth in league scoring with four goals and two assists in four games, one point ahead of Skapski who has three goals and two assists

Meanwhile, Ryan Simpson was selected by the Langley Rivermen.

Devon Toews and Jackson Playfair have signed on with the Surrey Eagles and the Langley Rivermen.  Both student-athletes played instrumental roles in Yale's 2nd consecutive provincial championship.  All the best boys in the BCHL!

Devon Toews, the smooth skating and talented defensemen, signed with the BCHL's Surrey Eagles this year.  Devon was an instrumental player in Yale's two provincial high school titles as he was tournament MVP in 2010, and 2nd leading scorer in 2011.  All the best Devon!!

Congratulations to Jake Virtanen on being drafted 1st overall in the 2011 WHL Bantam draft by the Calgary Hitmen. Jake is a powerful skater, goal-scorer, and checker who scored over 100pts in his Bantam season. He is a member of the Yale Hockey Academy.

 

Other Academy and Yale Secondary students who were selected in the bantam draft were:

  • Ryan Simpson 2nd round to Vancouver Giants
  • Mitchell Skapski 4th round to Portland Winterhawks
  • JJ Virtanen 8th round to Kootenay Ice

Yale has defended their provincial high school title with a 7-3 victory over the Earl Marriott Mariners. WHL first round draft pick Jake Virtanen notched two goals en route to the championship victory. Fantastic goaltending by Brendan Sharp also was a key in the victory.
